All About Woven Polypropylene (PP)
What is Polypropylene?
Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer produced by polymerization of a monomer called propylene. Being a rugged material and due to its inertness to chemical, moisture and excellent resistance towards fungus and rotting, it has been accepted as a great material for a wide variety of industrial applications which include packaging of consumer products, plastic parts for various industries including the automotive industry and textiles.
The process of polymerization of polypropylene was first conducted in 1951, by Phillips petroleum scientists named Paul Hogan and Robert Banks and later by Italian and German scientists Natta and Rehn. By 1957, it became popular and widespread commercial production began across Europe. Today, it is one of the most commonly produced plastics in the world.
What is Woven Polypropylene?
Polypropylene (PP) woven fabric is created by taking many threads/tapes of polypropylene and weaving them together in two directions (Warp and Weft) to form a lightweight and strong material. PP woven sacks/bags surpass the performance of linen, jute and paper. In many aspects, they also surpass the qualities of polyethylene.
Properties of Polypropylene (PP) woven bags:
Following are the properties of Polypropylene (PP) woven bags which makes them useful in the packaging industry:
- Non-Toxic: This property allows for a wide variety of applications including the food and pharmaceutical industry
- Eco-friendly and durable: They can be melted down and recycled to make other products. Besides, the bags last long enough and can be used many times to reduce the demand of single-use products
- Resistant to most alkalis and acid, organic solvents, degreasing agents
- Better burst strength than plastic bags
- Lightweight: it’s remarkably strong for how light it is
- Breathable: having the woven materials breathable is crucial to certain applications requiring airflow
- Can be side gusseted to accommodate bulky items easily
- Low cost: With technological advancements, productivity has increased making them much more cost effective
- Printable: Woven polypropylene is a great fabric to print on
- Can be laminated for better moisture retention
- UV Resistance (by adding additional components
